Welcome to the Introduction to Teaching class! This is a class designed for high school students who want to teach in elementary, middle, or high school classrooms. Students will gain a comprehensive overview of and experience with teaching and learning practices, assessments and their role in the classroom, state-assigned standards, child and adolescent development, the history of schools in the United States, behavior management systems, and social and cultural influences in education.

Students will work throughout the school year to improve their career and college readiness skills in reading, writing, speaking, and presenting. Students visit two college campuses that host a strong teaching program in order to learn more about their options after high school.

As an Introduction to Teaching student, you will work independently and in cooperative groups to:

  • Read and understand complex education texts (textbook, articles, etc.)
  • Write about what you think and read in a critical and organized way (journal prompts, response papers/essays, etc.)
  • Present on various topics in front of the class throughout the year.
  • Research education topics and create multimedia presentations to share with the class.
  • Create a lesson plan that you will present to the class.
  • Evaluate and critique the lesson plans of your peers.
  • Write your own Philosophy of Education.
  • Create a teaching portfolio by the end of the year.
